Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a new technology to help Kenyan businesses transmit tax invoices on a real-time basis and at their own convenience.

he electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMs) is an upgrade of the Tax Invoice Management System. To facilitate compliance, KRA announced through a public notice on February 28, 2023, that it will provide the software at no cost to business owners.
It is simple, convenient and flexible to use as it can be accessed through various electronic and digital devices such as computers and mobile phone apps.
“The objective of eTIMS is to reduce the cost of compliance for VAT-registered businesses. Through integration with eTIMS businesses will benefit from real-time invoice transmission providing accuracy in tax invoice declarations and reconciliation between filed returns and payments. This will also eliminate the need for multiple hardware purchases,” the taxman explained.
Rollout of the upgraded system, which is basically the software version of the technology aimed at providing additional ways of transmitting invoices to KRA, has entered the second phase and will be done gradually. At present, eTIMS targets traders who were unable to purchase the upgraded Electronic Tax Registers. Last year, KRA had set a deadline of November 30, 2022, for all VAT-registered taxpayers to migrate to the new ETR devices.
